Artistic Statement
My work stems from a simple premise: I'm drawn to anything that reminds me that the essential thing is for the river to flow. I absolutely love everything that allows this natural movement of life to occur. That which tries to stop it is the only thing I don't love, and yet I still regard it with consideration, because even resistance has a place in the riverbed. I'm interested in the dynamics of love, friendship, work, and social logic. Sometimes I don't understand what's happening and I don't feel love, but in the end, everything becomes understandable and everything flows.
The themes that run through my work are the simplest: the things I like, which is everything. In a way, I like EVERYTHING, and that's why my work is so varied. I move from burlesque to space, from portraiture to landscape, from the intimate to the symbolic. I revisit classic texts and common-sense truths because I deeply admire sayings, symbols, and that wisdom that has accompanied humanity since the beginning. In art, I'm moved by Cubism, Impressionism, and the Baroque; of contemporary art, what I've seen pleases me and captures my attention. I also love a good marker and a good pair of scissors: humble tools that sustain worlds.
As an artist, I am tireless. I live to create works —both visual and written— to think, to feel, to nourish my soul. I am always decorating, embellishing, or transforming something with my own unique aesthetic. I integrate writing and visual art naturally: my themes travel throughout everything and meet on the canvas, sometimes to embrace each other, sometimes to clash, but always flowing into the same river.
Imperfection occupies a central place in my work. The Parthenon, considered the most perfect building in history, is full of intentional metric imperfections. Like it, perfection needs imperfection to exist. In carelessness, in the aggressive brushstroke, in the variety of themes, in the lack of technique, and in everything that characterizes me, I find the possibility of my own perfection, even if only in the realm of ideas.
My work is, in essence, a dialogue between what flows and what resists, between word and image, between the classical and the intimate, between the perfect and the imperfect. Everything adds up. Everything finds its place. Everything returns to the river.
